Falling UP
St Margaret's Cave
Development
Falling UP St Margaret's Cave was a collaboration with OnFife in 2023. This project was a follow up to the Falling UP 8.0 'Outside-Inside' exhibition at the Dunfermline Library & Galleries Community Gallery space. The project saw fabric display and soundscape components at the historic site of St Margaret's Cave in Dunfermline. Fabrics were positioned on two woodhenges next to the St Margaret's Cave entrance, whilst the soundscape piece was played inside the cave. We selected fabric artworks which related either directly or indirectly to the theme of heritage. Significant to this project was the timing of the intervention for the long awaited temporally re-opening of the St Margaret's Cave after many years of it being closed and dormant. The Sanctuary soundscape was a legacy Falling UP artwork originally created for the Falling UP 4.0 exhibition at the Dunfermline Abbey Church in 2018. Due to its interpretative theme of sanctuary (in all aspects) this soundscape was repurposed and recontextualised for use in the environment of the cave. It was also deliberate to harmonise with and connect to the cave as a place of sanctuary for St Margaret and others.
