Falling UP
Calais Woodhenge

Development

The Falling UP Woodhenge is our outdoor gallery located at an ancient Bronze Age site in the Calais Woods. The woodhenge itself consists of both large and small woodcuts strategically positioned for the display of fabric artworks and slate artworks. The displays vary from short pop-up fabric exhibitions to more long-term slate presentations. The fabric exhibitions consist of reproduced artworks, which initially begin life as smaller format pieces that are enlarged and printed onto fabric. These artworks take on a life of their own depending on the breeze and wind in the woods causing them to sway and ripple. This makes for an engaging spectacle as nature asserts its presence. Contrastingly, the slate exhibitions are designed to be ephemeral, allowing the artworks to age and transform across seasons, showcasing the intervention of the environment as an acting agent of change. The first Falling UP Woodhenge display took place around the Winter Solstice of 2022 with artworks on the theme of the Bronze Age and creatures of the wood.
